Hatching Easter Chicks Crochet Pattern

Here is a very cute crochet pattern for Easter chicks hatching out of their egg shells. They would also make adorable baby shower gifts! Enjoy!

Supplies
Size 4 mm and 3.5 mm crochet hooks
Worsted weight yarn in your choice of colors  (Eggs and chickies pictured were crocheted using 100% cotton Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn)
Fiber/poly-fil
Yarn needle
Orange felt for beak
Sewing needle and thread to match beak
Stitch marker
Plastic eyes
Crochet terms
Ch - Chain
Sc - Single crochet
Scinc - Single crochet increase
Rnd - Round

Skills
Ch - Chain
Sc - Single crochet
Scinc - Single crochet increase
Scdec - Single crochet decrease
Sts - stitches
Rnd - Round

Spring Chickies for Easter!

Instructions

Egg Shell Bottom

Using 4 mm crochet hook
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 5 sc into second ch from hook
Rnd 2: Scinc in each sc around - 10 sts.
Rnd 3: *1 sc, 1 scinc; repeat from * - 15 sts.
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around
Rnd 5: *2 sc, 1 scinc; repeat from * - 20 sts.
Rnd 6: *3 sc, 1 scinc; repeat from * - 25 sts.
Rnd 7-8: Sc in each sc around
Rnd 9: *Sc 3, scdec 1; repeat from * - 20 sts.
Switch to 3.5 mm crochet hook. This last round will create the jagged egg shell edge. There will be a “peak” created in every other sc.
Rnd 10: *Sc 1, ch 3, sc 1 into same stitch as the previous sc, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * - There will be 10 “peaks.”
Fasten off

Using 4 mm crochet hook
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 5 sc into second ch from hook
Rnd 2: Scinc in each sc around - 10 sts.
Rnd 3: *1 sc, 1 scinc; repeat from * - 15 sts.
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around
Switch to 3.5 mm crochet hook. This last round will create the jagged egg shell edge. There will be a “peak” created in every other sc.
Rnd 5: *Sc 1, ch 3, sc 1 into same stitch as the previous sc, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * - There will be 8 “peaks.” Because there are 15 stitches in the previous round there will be two peaks next to one another at the end.
Fasten off

Chick

Using 4 mm crochet hook
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 5 sc into second ch from hook
Rnd 2: Scinc in each sc around - 10 sts.
Rnd 3: *1 sc, 1 scinc; repeat from * - 15 sts.
Rnd 4: *2 sc, 1 scinc; repeat from * - 20 sts.
Rnd 5-9: Sc in each sn around
Rnd 10: *1 sc, 2 scdec; repeat from * - 12 sts.
Rnd 11: *1 sc, 2 scinc; repeat from * - 20 sts.
Rnd 12-14: Sc in each sc around
Rnd 15: *2 sc, 1 sc dec; repeat from * - 15 sts.
Cut a small diamond out of orange felt for the beak and sew to head. Stuff most of the way.
Rnd 16: *1 sc, 1 scdec; repeat from * - 10 sts.
Finish stuffing
Rnd 17: Scdec in each sc around
Fasten off

Finishing
Attach eyes to chickie. Weave in all lose ends.

  3. This is so adorable! I am not a beginner, but I have a very hard time following a pattern, but I can usually make most anything just by looking at it and playing around. I will have to try it out! Thanks for this idea

  4. I have a small problem at round 10 of the chick... I don't see how I can decrease from 20 to 12.... There are 2 sc left. Help! What am I doing wrong????

  5. This is super cute. I'm making some for my nephews birthday (he loves baby chickies and plays with them all the time). I'm using an acrylic yarn and a 3.5 mm and 3 mm hooks... Turning out great! Oh. I also made the beaks from orange yarn instead of using felt. Thanks so much for the awesome pattern
